A glimpse of the teaching

Turn a fact into
an explanation.

Knowing that built-up areas can flood is a starting point. An explanation needs to connect the surface, the movement of water and the river response.

Original teaching example. This is not an official Cambridge question or mark scheme.

Explain how urbanisation can increase flood risk.

“There are more roads and buildings.”

Build the connection
  1. 01Impermeable surfaces reduce infiltration.
  2. 02More water reaches drains and rivers as surface runoff.
  3. 03Water can reach the channel faster, shortening lag time and increasing peak discharge.

Then connect the higher peak discharge to a greater chance of the river exceeding its channel capacity.

The proposed programme

Six weeks. Skills that connect.

Modelling, guided practice and independent answers in each live lesson, with 30–40 minutes of practice between sessions.

01Read the task, shape the answer

Command words, river data and urban flood risk. Distinguish description from explanation and use evidence that answers the question.

02Read maps, graphs and diagrams

Interpret physical geography resources through rivers and coasts. Select useful figures, units and geographical patterns.

03Explain human geography patterns

Compare population and urban-change data, support comparisons with figures and connect causes to consequences.

04Use detailed specific examples

Select precise physical and human geography evidence and adapt it to the question, instead of reproducing a memorised account.

05Evaluate and make a judgement

Weigh flood-management and urban-sustainability choices. Support a decision and explain why the context matters.

06Apply the skills under time pressure

Complete a fresh course assessment, review progress against the opening diagnostic and build a focused revision plan.

This is a Papers 1 and 2 exam-skills course for students already learning the content. It does not cover the whole syllabus or provide specialist Paper 4 or coursework tuition. Course assessments are not official mocks or grade predictions.
